Goodreads Synopsis: From the author of THE PUSH, a pageturner about four suburban families whose lives are changed when the unthinkable happens--and what is lost when good people make unconscionable choices The Loverlys sit by the hospital bed of their young son who is in a coma after falling from his bedroom window in the middle of the night; his mother, Whitney, will not speak to anyone. Back home, their friends and neighbors are left in shock, each confronting their own role in the events that led up to what happened that terrible night: the warm, altruistic Parks who are the Loverlys' best friends; the young, ambitious Goldsmiths who are struggling to start a family of their own; and the quiet, elderly Portuguese couple who care for their adult son with a developmental disability, and who pass the long days on the front porch, watching their neighbors go about their busy lives. The story spins out over the course of one week, in the alternating voices of the women in each family as they are forced to face the secrets within the walls of their own homes, and the uncomfortable truths that connect them all to one another. Set against the heartwrenching drama of what will happen to Xavier, who hangs between death and life, or a life changed forever, THE WHISPERS is a novel about what happens when we put our needs ahead of our children's. Exploring the quiet sacrifices of motherhood, the intuitions that we silence, the complexities of our closest friendships, and the danger of envy, this is a novel about the reverberations of life's most difficult decisions. The Whispers by Ashley Audrain | Goodreads Thank you to Ashley Audrain, Penguin Random House Canada, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of The Whispers for me to read and review. What a roller coaster of a story! I found it a bit slow to start with a large cast of characters to keep track of, but once it picked up the twists and turns and unexpected events just kept coming! The characters pulled at my heartstrings then made me hate them and back and forth throughout the whole book. The ending wasn't super surprising, however there were some remaining loose threads that weren't tied up. I do wish that we had a bit more closure on some of the aspects and characters, but overall it was a compelling, excellent read. 4 Stars!

Goodreads Synopsis: All of us knew him. One of us killed him... Seven women stand in shock in a seedy hotel room; a man's severed head sits in the centre of the floor. Each of the women - the wife, the teenager, the ex, the journalist, the colleague, the friend, and the woman who raised him - has a very good reason to have done it, yet each swears she did not. In order to protect each other, they must figure out who is responsible, all while staying one step ahead of the police. Against the ticking clock of a murder investigation, each woman's secret is brought to light as the connections between them converge to reveal a killer. A dark and nuanced portrait of love, loyalty, and manipulation, Speak of the Devil explores the roles in which women are cast in the lives of terrible men...and the fallout when they refuse to stay silent for one moment longer. Speak of the Devil by Rose Wilding | Goodreads Thank you to Rose Wilding, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of Speak of the Devil for me to read and review. This novel drew me in from the start and kept me wondering all the way through. There were lots of characters each with their own connection to the 'victim' and that made it challenging at first to be able to keep track of who was who. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of the story however it was a bit slow moving and the reveal at the end wasn't surprising. So I would have to say in my opinion this story was good but not great. 3 Stars! |
