Book Reviews & Thoughts |
Goodreads Synopsis: Kara Peterson last drove away from Paige, Ohio ten years ago after reporting a rape. She thought she knew who was responsible. She thought it was over. But she doesn't know everything that happened that night. When her father passes away unexpectedly, Kara's forced to return to her hometown. Paige should be a safe little town, especially for the daughter of its favorite sheriff, but something's wrong with Kara's memories. There are times that have gone missing. In fact, there are more and more of them the longer she stays in town. Maybe it's her hometown getting to her. Or maybe it's just him. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59218489-crickets Thank you to Lee Chappel and Bleau Press for providing me with an ebook copy of Crickets for me to review. What an eerie, unputdownable book! Firstly, I am never one to judge a book by its cover, but Crickets has two cover versions and they are both gorgeous and very thoughtfully done. They instilled a sense of wonderment, anticipation and suspense in me before I even opened the book! The multiple points of view was done incredibly well, showing the events from all different perspectives. However, I did find it a bit hard to follow at the very beginning, as we hadn't learned very much about the characters yet. By about chapter 9 though I was hooked and fully invested in seeing where the story would go. There were a few wording errors that I noticed throughout the book, but not enough to detract from the story. Chappel did an outstanding job of creating a creepy vibe that ran as an undercurrent throughout most of the story, which had me doubting which characters could truly be trusted and suspecting almost everyone. So when the reveal of the rapist finally took place I wasn't totally shocked as I had already started to question and suspect almost everyone, due to the creepy, suspicious vibe created. I loved the way Chappel wrapped up the story with an empowering, overcoming the past, happily ever after scenario. I highly recommend this book for any psychological suspense lovers! 4 Stars!

What an addictive story! I loved the character development shown, as we gradually learned more and more about each character through the multiple points of view writing style that was used. The plot was filled with suspense, passion, anticipation, and heart-warming moments. There were a few wording issues here and there that I noticed, such as the word later used when the word longer would have been a better fit for the sentence. There was also one instance where the incorrect name was used. These errors disrupted the flow of my reading, however, they did not detract from the great story being told. Sandra Alex's writing style contains numerous moments infused with humor and sarcastic expressions that made me laugh out loud. Proceed with Caution is part of a 5 book series, but can be read as a standalone novel. The further I read, the more I began to crave reading the other five books. I can't wait to see where the other Ford brother's stories will go. 4 Stars! Goodreads Synopsis: A college student reluctantly attends a family chili cookout that turns into a never ending nightmare. A man desperate for job skills uses a brain implant to help him learn, but it malfunctions and leaves him sexually attracted to shadows. A private investigator is hired to discover who keeps befouling the walls of convenience store bathrooms. Two deer engaged in combat find that they are unable to unlock from one another’s antlers after the fight is over. A single mother spends 2020 battling an evil landlord, a fascist neighbor, national political chaos, and a global pandemic. These are the strange stories told by regulars at the local bar on Christmas Eve, stories which each began with a phone call from someone who announced “you don’t know me, but we’re cousins.” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58878054-cousin-calls Thank you to Zeb Haradon for providing me with an ebook copy of Cousin Calls for me to review. Unfortunately, this book did not catch my interest, and I ended up not finishing it. There are a number of very unique characters with interesting, unconventional personalities. Haradon did a great job describing their interactions. I felt the introduction into the story could have been expanded a bit, which would have possibly drawn me in a bit more. It just wasn't the genre/book for me. I will conclude by saying, I feel this book would be a much better fit for someone who is typically a science fiction reader. 2 Stars! Goodreads Synopsis: Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died. Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59344312-verity What a wild ride! This story is addictive. I did not want to put this book down from the very first pages. Verity had me constantly second guessing what I believed to be true or even possible! It is full of twists and turns that I did not see coming! And the ending..... I am still questioning what is the actual truth. I loved the book within a book layout of this book. It made me think back to reading Home Before Dark by Riley Sager with the chapters of the book interspersed throughout the overarching story. The descriptive writing puts you right there with the main character feeling all the emotions she feels from anxiety to desire to terror. For all lovers of suspense or thrillers, I highly recommend Verity! 5 Stars! Goodreads Synopsis: For the second time in a year a woman arrives in the small town of Virgin River trying to escape the past. John “Preacher” Middleton is about to close the bar when a young woman and her three-year-old son come in out of a wet October night. A marine who has seen his share of pain, Preacher knows a crisis when he sees one—the woman is covered in bruises. He wants to protect them, and he wants to punish whoever did this to her, but he knows immediately that this inclination to protect is something much more. Paige Lassiter has stirred up emotions in this gentle giant of a man—emotions that he has never allowed himself to feel. But when Paige’s ex-husband turns up in Virgin River, Preacher knows his own future hangs in the balance. And if there’s one thing in the marines’ motto of Semper Fidelis—always faithful—has taught him, it’s that some things are worth fighting for. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/184854.Shelter_Mountain Wow! There was so much happen in this book that it kept me hooked from the first page to the last! Highs and lows abound! There was a bit of everything in this one with romance, drama, thriller, mystery, and suspense! With all that going on, Carr still managed to include many situations and lines that made me laugh out loud while reading! I can't wait to see where she takes the story next in the 3rd book. 5 Stars! Goodreads Synopsis: Welcome back to Virgin River with the book that started it all… Wanted: Midwife/nurse practitioner in Virgin River, population six hundred. Make a difference against a backdrop of towering California redwoods and crystal clear rivers. Rent-free cabin included. When the recently widowed Melinda Monroe sees this ad, she quickly decides that the remote mountain town of Virgin River might be the perfect place to escape her heartache, and to reenergize the nursing career she loves. Realizing she’s made a huge mistake, Mel decides to leave town the following morning. But a tiny baby abandoned on a front porch changes her plans…and former marine Jack Sheridan cements them into place. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/184850.Virgin_River This is the first book in the Virgin River series and what a wonderful story! It is filled with extremely descriptive writing, creating vivid imagery throughout the entire book. There was romance, drama, and numerous laugh out loud moments! This book series has been made into a Netflix series which I had watched prior to reading the book, which is backwards from what I normally try to do. A number of things were altered within the Netflix series, but followed the same general storyline. Personally I loved both, and recommend both reading and watching! 5 Stars! Goodreads Synopsis: Belle was in her final year of High-School and everything seemed to be looking up... Going behind her best friends back to entertain the sexual desires within her. Soon enough, to which she has no control, her deepest most painful secret comes to light. Who knew the boy she'd known all along would pull her into a world she didn't know would be her end and her beginning. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58717950-because-of-him This book can be found on the Dreame Books app and was a very intriguing story that drew me in right from the beginning. There was romance, heartache, drama, and sex! If romance stories with lots of sex scenes are not for you then this is not the book for you. If they are, then you definitely want to read Because of Him. I love the complicated relationship dynamics between the friends, families, and lovers that were hinted at and highlighted in equal measure throughout the story. Overall, this book had quite a few grammatical and spelling errors, but in comparison to many other books on the Dreame Books app it is doing great in terms of the editing still needed. I can't wait to read more in the second book and the spin off story that tells the story of 2 of the other characters. 3 Stars! |
